SUMMARY:Screening of Documentary "Check It"
DESCRIPTION:October’s monthly meeting will feature the film “CHECK IT” (dir. Dana Flor & Toby Oppenheimer).\nThe film tells the story of a group of young transgender and gay people\, mostly African-American\, who responded to bullying\, racism\, transphobia\, and other violence by forming a gang called Check It in 2009. They’ve built a reputation for unity and for vengeance against anyone who dares to cross them. The documentary premiered at the Tribeca film festival last year.\nThe members of Check It have tried to leave violence behind\, turning to more productive pursuits\, such as creating a fashion label\, but their lives are still filled with challenges. The film highlights the young people’s resiliency\, loyalty to one another\, and above all\, a deep commitment to better themselves.\nJoin us for the film\, followed by discussion afterwards.
