SUMMARY:[CONNECT] What Does the U.S. Supreme Court Decision Really Mean for Trans Folks?
DESCRIPTION:Join FORGE and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin\, Inclusion Health Clinic for supportive social connection.\nThe U.S. Supreme Court recently declared that discrimination at work because of gender identity or sexual orientation is discrimination “because of . . . sex.” How courts interpret those words – “because of sex” – directly impacts the everyday lives of trans and non-binary individuals. Come learn about the Supreme Court cases that gay and trans plaintiffs won\, what their victory means for trans and non-binary employees\, and how this development can spur positive change in schools\, health care\, and more. \n \nPresenter: Shelley Gregory\nShelley is a trans human\, activist\, and advocate\, and the Strategic Project Coordinator for FORGE. Shelley has worked actively in the LGBTQI+ community for over 25 years and began to focus their work on advocacy for transgender and non-binary folx nearly two decades ago. Their background is as a civil rights lawyer. Shelley continually aims to contribute to improving quality of life for trans and non-binary individuals and increasing our inclusion in society. DESCRIPTION:Join FORGE and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin\, Inclusion Health Clinic for an opportunity to ask questions and engage with professionals serving the trans/non-binary community. \n“Can My Health History Help Solve the COVID crisis?”\n“Can My Health History Help Solve the COVID crisis?”  The answer is YES! Two large national longitudinal health studies are actively recruiting LGBTQ participants.  Mahri Bahati of PRIDEnet and Dr. Jeff Whittle representing the All of Us study will present how their studies have used data they’d already gathered to contribute to understanding COVID-19. They’ll describe the studies’ privacy and security issues\, study aims\, results so far\, and how people can enroll. \n \nPresenters:\nJeffrey C. Whittle\, MD\, MPH\, and Mahri Bahati\, MPH \nJeffrey C. Whittle\, MD\, MPH\nJeffrey C. Whittle\, MD\, MPH\, is a Staff Physician at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center and Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. He attended the Medical College of Wisconsin then received his internal medicine residency training at the University of Alabama – Birmingham. After staying on a year as Chief Medical Resident he was a fellow in General Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions\, where he also received his Masters of Public Health. After ten years on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh he became Division Director at the Kansas University Medical Center in September of 2001. He moved to the Medical College of Wisconsin in March of 2005. \nMahri Bahati\, MPH\nLGBTQ Community Engagement Specialist PRIDEnet\nPronouns: she\, her\, hers\nMahri Bahati\, MPH is a creative and passionate public health professional with extensive experience across the HIV/AIDS continuum of care\, including anti-retroviral medication access\, HIV prevention and surveillance\, harm reduction\, and community mobilization. Most recently she worked for the Global Forum on MSM and HIV as Public Health Advisor where she developed and managed a global capacity building project to facilitate organizational development and build self-sustainability for trans-led organizations throughout the global south. Her professional interests include sexual and gender minority health equity\, HIV treatment adherence\, PrEP access\, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.\nMahri earned her Master of Public Health degree at the University of Kentucky in 2013\, with a focus in Epidemiology. As an undergrad she began volunteering with local HIV/AIDS non-profits which sparked a professional interest in public health along with a lifelong interest in volunteering and community organizing.\nMahri is excited to join the PRIDE team as the All of Us Research Program Engagement Navigator\, where she will work to engage ‘yet to be reached’ sexual and gender minority sub-communities who are new to health research\, who have experienced barriers in accessing healthcare\, or who have had negative research experiences.\n. \nAbout ASK events:\nASK the Expert events are open periods of regularly scheduled time (Tuesdays from 6-7:00pm and Saturdays from 1-2:00pm) where you can ask questions to health care providers\, mental health professionals\, social workers\, advocates\, and lawyers.\nInitiated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic\, questions and topics discussed may focus on medical issues\, mental health concerns\, coping skills\, access to public benefits\, links to resources\, where and how to access support. We’ll also talk about new protections during the COVID-19 period. \n \nPresenter: Shelley Gregory (they/them or any pronouns)\nShelley is a trans human\, activist\, and advocate\, and the Strategic Project Coordinator for FORGE. Shelley has worked actively in the LGBTQI+ community for over 25 years and began to focus their work on advocacy for transgender and non-binary folx nearly two decades ago. Their background is as a civil rights lawyer. Shelley continually aims to contribute to improving quality of life for trans and non-binary individuals and increasing our inclusion in society. Joanna has a strong passion for leadership\, medical social work\, HIV care and prevention\, and LGBTQ affirming healthcare. \nCarolyn Wesolowski\nCarolyn is a proud Milwaukee native with a love of urban exploration both at home and beyond. She has a Master’s in Community Counseling from Marquette University with a focus on trauma-informed counseling and care. Carolyn’s work has primarily focused on supporting people living with HIV in a social services capacity\, which led her to her current role as a Linkage to Care Specialist with the Medical College of Wisconsin. She finds herself incredibly fortunate to share in the vibrancy of so many lives in such a profound way. Her work and passions also support the Froedtert Inclusion Health Clinic and the broader LGBTQ+ community.\n \n. \nAbout ASK events:\nASK the Expert events are open periods of regularly scheduled time (Tuesdays from 6-7:00pm and Saturdays from 1-2:00pm) where you can ask questions to health care providers\, mental health professionals\, social workers\, advocates\, and lawyers.\nInitiated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic\, questions and topics discussed may focus on medical issues\, mental health concerns\, coping skills\, access to public benefits\, links to resources\, where and how to access support. Each session will have a broad focus within these areas. Come with your questions. Sit back.
