SUMMARY:Bike Ride on Beerline Trail
DESCRIPTION:For this week’s FORGE Outdoors activity\, we will be going for a bike ride along the Beerline Trail and exploring some of Milwaukee’s most exciting urban parks! We will meet at Gordon Park and continue through the Riverwest/lakefront area. The ride is around 4 miles\, but more hilly than our first bike ride on the Oak Leaf Trail. It also includes more off-trail street biking! We will take frequent breaks at our scenic stops and enjoy refreshments at Fuel Cafe on the way back to Gordon Park.\nTime: 1-4 PM.\nLocation: We will meet at Gordon Park (2828 N Humboldt Blvd\, Milwaukee\, WI 53212) at the splash pad! Gordon Park has a large parking lot if you are driving\, and is accessible by bus lines 22 and 14\, which stop at Humboldt & Locust. We will make several stops along the Beerline trail\, including Kadish Park\, the Swing Park\, and a secret climbing wall along the river! We will return along the Beerline Trail and stop at Fuel Cafe on Center St. (18 E Center St\, Milwaukee\, WI 53212) for refreshments. For those who parked at Gordon Park\, we will return there at the end of our trip.\nIf you have transportation questions\, please contact me at caleb@forge-forward.org. If you arrive on Sunday and have trouble finding our meeting spot\, please call or text me at 414-249-6746.\nWhat to bring: Yourself\, your bike\, a helmet(!)\, a water bottle\, sunscreen\, comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing\, snacks (optional)\, and some pocket money for drinks at Fuel! I would recommend bringing $3-$5 if you would like to buy a refreshment when we stop. It’s very important to stay hydrated and comfortable\, so make sure that you can move freely in your clothing. If you are binding\, please be especially careful not to overheat\, and drink plenty of water! We will take as many breaks as needed.\nThis bike ride is shorter than our first bike ride on the Oak Leaf Trail\, but may be more physically strenuous because of hills. We can walk steep hills if necessary and turn our bike ride into a bike & hike adventure! Please be mindful of this when deciding whether this outing is for you\, and contact me with any questions. We will do our best to make this ride as comfortable for everyone as possible.\nPlease bring any personal medication\, such as inhalers or epi-pens\, even if you do not think you will need them on this outing. Your safety is extremely important!\nWhat’s next?: Mark your calendars! The next FORGE Outdoors outing will be on Sunday\, July 7th. This week we will be slowing down for some walking meditation and other mindfulness practices at the labyrinth in Alice’s Garden! Keep an eye out for future FORGE Outdoors activities this summer!

The winning design may also appear on the t-shirts worn by FORGE’s PrideFest volunteers.  Winners will be selected on April 1\, 2019.\nWant to know more about the contest?  The guidelines are here.\nLet us know you’re attending on the Facebook Event page!\n \n\nRemember Where to Go\nRemember that FORGE is now meeting at IndependenceFirst\, 540 S. 1st Street.\nOur new location is one result of an emerging partnership with IndependenceFirst.\nPlenty of free parking is available\, and the new site is on the Green and 15 bus lines.\nFor the safety and comfort of those with chemical and environmental sensitivities\, IndependenceFirst requests that people refrain from using any perfumed grooming products such as scented soaps\, deodorants\, perfumes\, and heavily scented fabric softeners. SUMMARY:February [Monthly Community Meeting] - Free CeCe! (Film)
DESCRIPTION:Much of what we celebrate during Black History Month is achievements. Given the U.S.’s long and difficult history around race\, it makes sense that many of these achievements are overcoming tremendous adversities and mounting collective resistance and resilience efforts. Both of those themes are front and center in Free CeCe!\, a film we will view together Saturday\, February 16\, 2019 (2:00pm)\, at Independence First.\nFree CeCe! features interviews between noted trans actor Laverne Cox and CeCe McDonald. In 2012\, McDonald – a bi Black trans woman – and her friends were physically assaulted\, including racist and transphobic threats and taunts. McDonald defended herself\, resulting her attacker’s death. CeCe was jailed in men’s prisons\, and community members – including Laverne Cox and dozens of advocates around the country – worked to get her hormones and eventually arrange for her early release.\nIs it a coincidence this all took place in Minneapolis\, where the first two openly trans City Council Members were elected in 2017? Come and we’ll talk about it!\nBut Do It In a New Space!\nRemember that FORGE is now meeting at Independence First. Please note that because so many of Independence First clients (like FORGE participants) have chemical sensitivities\, this will be a scent-free meeting. Please avoid using products that are scented.\nPlenty of free parking is available\, and the new site is on the Green and 15 bus lines. Join us!\n  \n\nNew Meeting Location!\nThe January 2019 FORGE meeting will not be held in our usual place. Instead\, we will be meeting at: \nIndependence First \n540 S 1st Street \nMilwaukee\, WI \nOur new location is one result of an emerging partnership with IndependenceFirst.\nPlenty of free parking is available\, and we hope the new site will be more accessible to those who bus in.\nFor the safety and comfort of those with chemical and environmental sensitivities\, IndependenceFirst requests that people refrain from using any perfumed grooming products such as scented soaps\, deodorants\, perfumes\, and heavily scented fabric softeners. It is also important that the space remain a smoke-free environment; therefore in addition to not smoking in the building\, we ask that you refrain from smoking in paths of travel and doorways.\n

SUMMARY:January [Monthly Community Meeting] - Tooling Up for 2019: Mindfulness\, Meditation\, Music\, and More!
DESCRIPTION: \n\n2018 was a rocky road\, and at least politically\, and many of us are concerned about what might happen as we move into 2019.  So let’s tool up! FORGE is devoting its first meeting of 2019 to sharing practical skills for getting through the day – even the hard days. We’ll help participants experience and learn to repeat calming coping skills using music\, art\, meditation\, movement\, and other modalities.  All of us can use more ways to restore a sense of calmness amidst the chaos and challenges of our lives. Come join us for a participatory and revelatory experience!\n  \nNew Meeting Location!\nThe January 2019 FORGE meeting will not be held in our usual place. It is also important that the space remain a smoke-free environment; therefore in addition to not smoking in the building\, we ask that you refrain from smoking in paths of travel and doorways.\nJoin us for a relaxing first event of 2019!\n \n

SUMMARY:December [Monthly Community Meeting] - Happy/Helpful/Healing Party
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited! Please join FORGE at our last meeting of the year for a community gathering to connect\, network\, socialize\, and just be you. Transgender and non-binary individuals\, friends and family\, and supportive community members are welcome to join in creating a reflective and restorative space for our community to close out 2018 – a year of notable challenges and remarkable highs (like recent court decisions in Wisconsin making trans-specific healthcare accessible to state employees and BadgerCare enrollees!).\nWe’ll also reserve time to hear from you. What would you like to see from FORGE in 2019 for support\, connection\, community events\, or in response to social/political developments? What ideas do you have to help FORGE reach more people to strengthen our rich and diverse communities?\nWe’ll bring games and music – you bring yourself\, your family\, your friends\, and\, if you’re able\, a treat to share!

SUMMARY:Karaoke For the Cause - BOUNCE!
DESCRIPTION:The first Friday of every month\, Bounce Milwaukee\, Milwaukee’s premiere place for bounce castles\, laser tag\, indoor rock climbing\, and arcade fun\, hosts karaoke to benefit a different local\, progressive charity. For December they’ve chosen FORGE!\nThere’s no cover to enter\, and kids (and those under 21) are welcome from 8-9. After 9pm\, things switch into 21+ mode. At least $1 from every drink (including mocktails!) sold at the bar from 8pm until the music stops will benefit the FORGE! FORGE staff will be on hand to let you know how you can assist or volunteer to support their work.\nFORGE is a national transgender anti-violence organization\, founded in 1994. Since 2009\, we have been federally funded to provide direct services to transgender\, gender non-conforming and gender non-binary survivors of sexual assault. Since 2011\, FORGE has served as the only transgender-focused organization federally funded to provide training and technical assistance to providers around the country who work with transgender survivors of sexual assault\, domestic and dating violence\, and stalking. Our role as a technical assistance provider has allowed us to directly see key continued and emerging challenges many agencies are experiencing in serving sexual assault survivors of all genders.\nPlease\, no Hotel California. We know it seems like a good idea\, but it’s really long.

SUMMARY:Balancing Yin and Yang: Chinese Medicine for Trans People [Sept Monthly Community Meeting]
DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on how the body is viewed through the lens of Chinese medicine. Kellen will explain the concepts of yin\, yang\, qi and blood\, and will describe how those aspects of the body change during different parts of the transition process. Acupuncture and herbal medicine help the body adjust more smoothly to hormones and surgeries\, and learning the basics of the foundational theories behind Chinese medicine can increase self-awareness and self-care.\nBio:\nKellen is a non-binary trans acupuncturist at North Node Clinic – a holistic health clinic they co-own with Ellice Plant. In addition to acupuncture and herbal medicine\, they use techniques including moxibustion\, cupping\, and gua sha. They are passionate about LGBTQI competent health care and are committed to maintaining a practice that is affordable and accessible with a mission of creating anti-racist and anti-classist space.
