Joseph Dhara describes his practice as: "Welcoming, friendly, warm and respectful therapy for all genders and expression. Helping many people with anxiety, sorting through gender expression and sexual concerns and identities, able to write letters as needed for gender-related services and resources. Continually growing myself, I enjoy helping people figure out their authentic self, and ways of being. I can help you find insight and your personal truth and identity. I am not thrown by much, and welcome those with anxiety, neurodiversity, mental health questions and needs, and those seeking support and / or education related to sexual identities and preferences on a full spectrum, including asexuality, LGBTQ, non-monogamy/polyamory, BDSM/kinks and fetishes, intersex, transgender, non-binary and metagender, as well as body related stress and trauma.
I grew up in conservative religious environment, and have since grown to be more liberal - I initially started counseling as an integrative breathwork and mindfulness practitioner, and am a practicing artist and former competitive classical pianist. I enjoy helping people feel the feelings that can help them feel more alive, and gently assisting with integrating challenging or traumatic experiences or belief systems. I welcome all family / relational systems, and enjoy helping people find and build a life around their strengths and true heart. I am patient, and have lived experiences with many things, including parenting, gender affirmation/transition, various relationships, living with chronic illness, as well as multiple disability and movement related challenges. As much as possible, I seek to help others have a therapy experience that is pleasant, enjoyable, humorous, compassionate, educational, strengthening, and encouraging. I am interested in understanding how the world affects us, and how we can find new pathways that increase comfort and confidence in ourselves."
Joseph has worked with trans clients for 10+ years and writes letters of referral for hormone therapy, gender-affirming surgery, and updating identity documents or other records.
Extensive experience with trans people
My preference is to offer education as needed on questions related to gender, and to be respectful of what people already know as truth, and also seek to answer challenging questions or offer support for best ways to be yourself. I can work within WPATH and ICATH as needed or as preferred.
