Transgender Day of Remembrance

Join FORGE and community partners in marking the Transgender Day of Remembrance. The greater Milwaukee community will be honoring those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender hate and/or violence on Monday, November 22, 2013 at 6:30pm at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center (1110. N Market Street, Second Floor, Milwaukee, WI 53202). This is a COMMUNITY event — for the community, of the community, by the community. Part of joining together as a community this year, is to hear multiple voices and diverse views. Readings from community members will be a central part of the event. Food and connection will round out the evening.

Social Support

November's social support meeting Film: A Self-Made Man At a crucial turning point in his life, Tony Ferriaolo’s inner voice said, “Create yourself.” This credo once saved his life and now serves as a guiding principle as he educates gender non-conforming youth, as well as their parents. Lori Petchers’ moving A Self-Made Man interweaves the poignant story of Ferraiolo’s personal transition with his life work as a transgender youth advocate. We watch Tony guide kids as young as eight through the confusing journey of defining themselves when challenged by a physical appearance that conflicts with their gender identity. At this time of quickening in transgender awareness, younger and younger kids are declaring their gender identities, and families are struggling to adjust. Petchers highlights A Self-Made Man who is an endearing and inspiring guiding light for whole families to move forward together with love, empowerment, and compassion. After the hour-long film, we will have time for […]

State of Transgender Policy 2013

Attitudes, policies, and laws affecting transgender and gender non-conforming people and our families are rapidly changing.  To help you keep up, FORGE has prepared a 22-minute webinar/recording that looks at the current state of many of the policy issues that most affect trans people and families, including:  employment, health care, identification documents, housing, education, the military and veterans, violence against trans people, taxes, aging, incarceration, and trans-specific cultural competency training. "Policy" can sound boring and irrelevant, but if you pee, access health care, drive, work, need housing, dream of gender-related surgery, or hope to grow old...it affects you!  The following two videos were developed to recreate the presentations at the September 28, 2103 Milwaukee FORGE social support and information meeting.  Learn about the phenomenal policy strides the trans community has made over the past few years, and where we are going next.  Never before has a minority group made so much progress so fast! The […]

Social Support

December's social support meeting: Holiday Party FORGE’s holiday party is an opportunity for new and old FORGE members and friends to simply hang out together for a relaxing evening of food, conversation, and games.  FORGE will provide Panera sandwiches and sides, as well as some beverages.  Please bring sweets, snacks, and/or other (non-alcoholic) drinks to share. All are welcome!

Parents’ Support Group

More and more transgender and gender non-conforming children and youth are coming out, so in January 2014 FORGE will begin sponsoring a new monthly support group in Milwaukee specifically for parents and other close relatives/caregivers of trans*, gender non-conforming, and questioning children and youth.  The group will provide an opportunity for parents to share their stories, struggles, and successes in navigating life at home and with their larger family, at school, in their neighborhood, within their spiritual communities, with medical and other providers, and much more.  Seasoned facilitators who are trans and/or part of a trans family will help keep the discussion safe and supportive, and will provide referrals and resources as needs are identified. The group will meet monthly so parents can create strong bonds with other parents and gain the critical support they need.  The first meeting is on January 12, 2014. For more information about the time and location, please email Parents […]

Monthly meeting – Screaming Queens (film)

Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria  (FILM) Frameline Film describes the film:  EMMY Award-winning Screaming Queens tells the little-known story of the first known act of collective, violent resistance to the social oppression of queer people in the United States - a 1966 riot in San Francisco's impoverished Tenderloin neighborhood, three years before the famous gay riot at New York's Stonewall Inn. Screaming Queens introduces viewers to street queens, cops and activist civil rights ministers who recall the riot and paint a vivid portrait of the wild transgender scene in 1960s San Francisco. Integrating the riot's story into the broader fabric of American life, the documentary connects the event to urban renewal, anti-war activism, civil rights and sexual liberation. With enticing archival footage and period music, this unknown story is dramatically brought back to life. Screaming Queens is a production of Victor Silverman and Susan Stryker produced in association with ITVS and KQED, with […]
